Search Engine Marketing

August 30, 2002

Every business comes to a point where how much to spend on advertising becomes an issue. Even if you have just opened a small business, like a bicycle repair shop or a cafe, you must decide how much of your capital you are going to spend on advertising. And if you have been in a business for a long time, you may know how important it is to keep expanding, and to make sure that your advertising dollar keeps up with that expansion.

In fact, marketing is crucial no matter what your size. Take the cafe for example. Many cafes, or even Starbuck’s franchises, stake their ground by creating a homey atmosphere in which people can sit and drink coffee and mingle with interesting people.

But the savvy coffee shop owner knows the value of exposure, and will not rely on a stable of locals who call the cafe a second home. This owner will attempt to attract as many people as she can to the establishment so that business will remain strong.

One excellent way that she can advertise is by putting an ad in the paper, but this ad does not necessarily have to be bought. In fact, if the owner starts up an open mike night offering 2 for 1 coffees, or free coffee to anyone who performs, then the local newspapers will post this in their events section, basically creating a free advertisement for the company.

But the best way that exists right now to advertise lies in search-engine marketing. Search engine marketing takes the Internet’s most powerful tool, the search, and uses it to the advantage of your business.

Imagine that the cafe owner could have everyone in her community looking at an ad for her cafe every time they use an Internet search for terms such as “nightlife”, “cafe”, or even the “coffee bean”. This is entirely possible now. With search-based online marketing that takes advantage of the Internet’s most powerful search engines, you can have your entire community staring face to face with your advertisement for as low a price as you can imagine: or lower.

Search based marketing is a good idea no matter what your business is, even if you only sell goods to other businesses. Even lawyers and doctors can benefit from placing ads for their firms and practices online.

Marketing your business with a search based system represents the best way to get a near instant return on your advertising dollar. Start today to bring yourself ahead of the competition.

Overture launches Match Driver

August 19, 2002

Overture’s newest technology, Match Driver, automatically corrects misspellings, plurals, singulars, etc and matches them to the root word.

This will allow advertisers to choose less keywords and result in a higher reach.

In many ways, this is also a strong negative as a singular vs plural match can mean a different search intent, thus advertisers will have much less control over who they are reaching with their keyword selections.
