Pay Per Click Tracking - Cookies
Posted: September 30, 2004
The advantage of cookies is that they stay on a users computer, and can track people for longer periods of time over the initial visit. This allows repeat customers, and customers who do not return to your website on the second visit through a pay per click search engine, to be properly credited to your pay per click advertising.
The downfall is that many privacy software packages block them so that they are never added to the computer or when privacy software scans a computer, it often deletes cookies. In these cases, the customers will not be properly tracked.
Some governments require explicit statements of use by websites that use cookies. Other privacy advocates are pushing for such legislation in other countries and often spread negative thinking about cookies, which entice people to disable cookies in their browser. While cookies do not contain viruses or malicious code, they are a way of tracking users, and as such, are seen by some as invasions of privacy.
